With a name like his, you’d expect Jean-Paul Bourelly to be French, or at least speak it. But no, the guitarist is American: he was born in 1960 in Chicago, but his father was Haitian, hence his surname.

This years festival at Sant’Anna Arresi will experience the first concert of Nu Grid. Jean-Paul Bourelly and Graham Haynes are the project initiators and Vernon Reed and DJ logic completing this auspicious quartet.
Jean-Paul Bourelly describes Nu Grid as the convergence point of four accomplished musicians. who have always expressed the progressive side of music, using the jazz impulse, free form funk, beat music and Afro-phonics to lead us into new meaningful musical spaces.
Experimental thinker and coronetist Graham Haynes conducts the Bitches Brew Revisited project and has eight recordings including “Transition” which was the last time these musicians appeared on the same record.
Guitarist, Vernon Reid is the founder of Grammy award winning rock group Living Colour as well as collaborator with Jamaladeen Tacuma in the group “Free Form Funky Freqs”.
Glob trotting funky beat master DJ Logic started out with the group Eye & I has amassed an astonishing array of collaborations with musicians from Sierra Leon Refugee Allstars to Bill Laswell.
Innovative blues explorer Jean-Paul Bourelly sometimes appearing as” Bourellywah” has 16 recordings, creating from his Berlin production house JPgotMangos, including his latest Cameroonian excursion, 3 Kings ”Famous Guys”.
The Nu Grid project represents a fresh sonic jazz adventure by merging technologies with the tested skills of powerful improvisers. Nu Grid is steeped in African America’s impulse to re-invent, as well as in these musicians association reflected over time.
It is a meeting point along the digital space ways in the sometimes contentious yet exciting arena where the instrumentalist’s skill duels it out with todays digital tools, guided by four master creators.
This is who makes up “New Grid” as they converge on St’ Anna Arresi, Sardinia to mix IT up .

ENGLISH
The Spontaneous Town Meeting is an interdisciplinary jam session in the format of a talk show taking place every month in the context of the series WE ARE TOMORROW – Visions and Retrospection on Occasion of the 1884 Berlin Conference. Jazz musician JeanPaul Bourelly invites musicians and writers, DJs, historians and actors to an afro-futuristic meeting in order to open up the gates of a Black collective knowledge archive. In an interaction between language and music, guests and audience, emotion and didactics, current and historic discourses are negotiated so as to emphasise new aspects and develop perspectives which so far seemed limited by the framework of their negotiation. As a consequence, discussions on the situation of refugees living in Berlin, the destruction of family relationships owing to the continuity of colonial conditions, the power dynamics between Old Europe and New Africa obtain an unknown variety of fresh perspectives and possible interpretations.
This newly formed duo appeals to the cinematic sense of music and the freedom to navigate beyond category. Inspired by the revolutionary 1960´s of Detroit, Chicago and Los Angeles, marinated over time, Citizen X finds a new voice in the theatre of today´s globalized one-world politics. The duets move through a landscape filled with a sense of spirituality, atmospheric sound bytes punctuated by wide ranging guitar sounds and observant commentary on today’s tumultuous world. Cadillac Eldorados, Sun Ra´s Arkestra and names like Amiri Baraka, Fred Hampton and Huey P. Newton come to mind in a blend of black-a-delic consciousness, bringing a sense of proximity to both danger, beauty and love.
Electronic, Afro Futuristic

Evil Music?
Obviously a loaded title. Ok we will be there. Hope to see our Berlin people. JP
The second day of SJF 2013 are two excellent concerts at the club SPATIF. First, a solo show performed Austrian trumpeter Franz Hautzinger. The Artist modulated the sound of his instrument with a variety of rather well-known guitar effects, (wah-wah, chorus, etc.), which made an electrifying impression.
After a few-minute break on the stage three gentlemen installed themselvesfrom the U.S.. The drummer Kenny Martin, Sadiq Bey took his place behind the microphone, Jean-Paul Bourelly played the guitar and also sang. This included a large number of electronics (including two laptops).
The Trio presented a strong performance, not only musically, but also in words.
“I was happy to see another festival that has chosen to program a series of music that informs and challenges a young audience with a program that selected modernity over nostalgia while assuming the publics intelligence and not just assuming their lack of. The smarter and more aware the youth are, the better my life will be. Art and music are the first essentials in those building blocks. Kudos to artistic director saxophonist Adam Pieronczyk” Bourelly

Throughout history music promoters, record companies & agents have resisted change!!…In Dixieland Jazz… this music was called “Jack Ass” (JASS) music when it was first formulated then changed to Jazz…Dizzy & Bird were under severe scrutiny in the beginning age of Bebop…. Coltrane was criticized in his latter years for evolving into spiritual concepts of music. Miles Davis was crucified for moving in directions of rock/funk as he shaped fusion music…Ornette Coleman and Don Cherry were ridiculed in the 50s…Chuck Berry, “Scat Man” Crothers, Elvis Presley & Buddy Holly were called Satanists as they shaped the beginnings of Rock & Roll… on Defunkt ‘s debut tour in Europe in 1978, opening the Wiesen Jazz Festival, we were “boo-ed” after our festival opening performance. The visionary Austrian promoter Fritz Thom, then paid us twice to also close the festival:-)
Are there similarities in these situations? Artists have creative vision beyond the promoters, agents & audience. Artists are motivated by creativity and development. Over thousands of years of existence and evolution on earth, Humans have instituted controls to limit the rate and nature of musical language development. Why? Consciousness leads to awareness! An emphasis on repetition and re-gurgitation of ‘genres/musical styles’ have effectively distorted our perception and curtailed the vast potential of our minds, bodies and souls. The manner, sound and the role that instruments play as a result have remained the same for hundreds, even thousands of years, allowing progress to be gained very slowly, maintaining maximum control, allowing full commercial exploitation thereby minimizing awareness and discovery. Experiments with sound have been allowed to function in isolated situations, out of reach and perception range of the population, who are masterfully controlled by multi-sensory distractions such as TV, computers, mobile phones, a bombardment of advertisement, mind numbing food additives and drugs, (illegal and legal) designed to create distorted reality. This has altered perception and the understanding of life style. We have been programmed to a delusional state, deprived of self-knowledge and the innate power accessible in our genetic code.
We must challenge our awareness and perception through vibrations that we understand as Music! Life is in constant evolution around us. Can we acknowledge the deep genetic voices in our sub-conscious; there to help us develop ourselves, tuning us in with life and helping us navigate a new multi-dimensional terrain? Yes! A new sonic language is imminent. Look around our planet at the popular uprisings occurring, in full swing with the “information age”. It is obvious that there is an opening underway. A “NEW (sound) LANGUAGE” is imminent! Not acoustic, not electric, not primitive, not futuristic but a merging of all these dimensions to speak to NOW. Life is a product of genetic evolution and alteration. Experiments have occurred over thousands of years, when traveling life forms in the universe merged with native life on earth.
This is a process of natural evolution throughout the galaxy. We are space travelers!! Our ship is the earth itself, traveling through the galaxy, orbiting the Sun! Embrace the future and evolution of sound and multi-dimensional realization. Understand the little known and least understood essence of life.
BB&T “New Language” present a new concept of sonic media, offering a new, unique approach to improvised music… a counter narrative to the huge body of “sameness” that is engulfing humanity. The existential creative process, fostered by necessity, is the passion fueling this group.
There is a necessity to speak to the times, service mankind, unlock the shackles of mental and spiritual bondage and weigh in on the side of humanity, expressing the shift, the changing of the global script. The situation is new and particular. WE focus on the awareness of sounds reacting to rhythm sculptured by BB&T (3 formidable figures of multi-culture). This is what gives “New Language” special meaning.
BB&T “New Language” offers a fresh concept in sonic adventure in improvisation and groove culture.

Jef Lee Johnson, Magic Intact
Saturday, 23 February 2013 18:16 | Written by Frédéric Goaty
Thus, tonight’s winter Sons d’Hiver, Jef Lee Johnson aka Rainbow Crow was no longer ours. But thanks to Reggie Washington’s true love for the blues of his takeoff companion, his magic resonated through the strings of another singular guitarist: Jean-Paul Bourelly.
Jean-Paul Bourelly (guitar, vocals), Reggie Washington (bass, vocals), Patrick Dorcéan (drums). Créteil Maison des Arts, Friday, Feb. 22.
The tribute was therefore as captivating as it was mesmerizing, for the former bassist of Five Elements of Steve Coleman, Buckshot LeFonque and RH Factor could not have found a better blues preacher than Jean Paul Bourelly for the music of Jef Lee Johnson relived on stage – one last time? Fingers crossed that others continue to interpret these delicate songs and blues to willingly poetic words.
We will be back soon, in another magazine covering the art and the style Jef Lee Johnson. Because, as he sang it so well,
“Everything starts right now.”
In the meantime, check out this concert on Arte Live Web:
Frédéric Goaty
“Butch’s approach gave us a new way to express and control the improvisational impulse with a larger group.
He figured out the pratical means of keeping ideas cohesive. This is a game changer. With the Conduction technique in hand, large format ensembles will be liberated, tooled with the means of expressing that illusive, “urgent spontaneity” that has served to fortify black cultural expression and identity of Africans in the Americans. This has until now been mostly the exculsive domain of the trio or quartet. Not any more.
On the personal level Butch was somewhat of a social genius. He had a way of handling people of all walks of life that was very special and personal.
I was in a Turkish bar with him in Berlin once and he had such a deep friendship with the bartender neither of them could speak the others language but they had a great communication, irony, jokes all of it.
It was all non verbal and intimate. That was Butch. ”
It was a great honor and pleasure to learn from him through the years and be effect by this innovative thinker.
JP Bourelly
Jeff Lee Johnsons music is a gleaming example of a guitarist who moved seamlessly through the traditions of the blues, r&b jazz and freeform treating them all as one extended language yet housing those ideas cleverly in a pop structure format that allowed it to travel well. Jeff Lee’s music carried the sonic signifiers that ones ear was accustom to if you were aware of the rich arch of important American music. One could hear Watt stacks, Texas Blues, Memphis blues , Prince, Wes Montgomery, Hendrix with a twinge of the rural heartland.
Yet he still possessed that wide perspective that stretched from the chaotic surges, reminiscent of Sonny Sharrock superimposed over verses filled with playful, bitter, sweet irony,”
“It got thumbs up, It got five stars, It got that nod now, Ev’rybody wants one”
” It ain’t Hard for you, You just sail on through”.
His chordal movements had a sentimental touch to them, yet stayed firm and never fell into the syrup bowl. He above all was a voice on guitar who left a body of work of cleverly crafted songs that used popular forms to express his most intimate and urgent messages.
I will appear in this concert dedicated to his memory and his music entitled “Rainbow Shadow”
With his close friend on bass Reggie Washington and drummer Patrice Dorcean.
22nd of February in Paris, France at the festival Sons d’ hiver .
His music will undoubtable live on. JPB

Those are some of the themes I have been gravitating towards when I workshop with my group and when I am teaching students. This workshop tries to avert the pitfall of the auto pilot solo tendencies by manipulating these multipule elements during soloing and performing a melody.
I take the participants through a series of exercises that promote free association and bring the players more into the consciousness of dialogue with a rhythm section. Thus avoiding a static drums beat over a static series of preconceived ideas or gymnastic tricks.
We break up this willing complicity with a little sensitivity training as well. Instead of putting more notes in the exchange, I try to get the player to establish an idea, then go through a cycle, reducing that idea down to fewer parts of the puzzle each time around. This training encourages disciple and also shows how playing less can be an effective direction in creating unique opportunities for meaningful interplay as a soloist leading a rhythm section.
On the sensitivity training side, I take the players through a series of exercises were we place a consciousness on listening to ones own playing with the ear of an outsider (one in the audience).
This is a mental training to separate the stages of hearing and to suggest separating the stages of emotions, to detect different stages of emotion that one may go through during a solo and identify how to keep a solo or melodic verse alive and vibrant.
I mean there is a strong visual image that can trigger you into some more interesting tonal territory To be the observer of emotions or the provocateur.
There are also visual techniques that we use to open up the mind and soul, imagining the imagination as a with the ablities to adjust and tune into subtle degrees of phrasing, dynamics, dramatic use of space and sonic expression. This machine imagery is effected by leaving the player free to reinvent his/her self and superimpose another identity on the journey of discovering ones capabilities.
I use the Butch Morris technique of conduction to direct the players through ensemble passages and in so doing, by the end of a workshop, we achieve a complete original work, embedded with the techniques of polyrhythm, sonic purpose and reduction.

I have been hearing a lot of musicians at Frankfurt this year talk about the new business atmosphere that we find ourselves in. What I am hearing is that the promise of being independent against the backdrop of the enabling force of the internet is coming to a fork in the road. A lot of notions about sitting at home or in the studio and watching your downloads click with the speed of Lewis Hamilton’s, tachometer, seems to be developing into a dream to no where.
Going out and playing live is the ultimate exposer for your music and the most durable bonding force for you and your fans. It seems almost everyone agrees, at least that has become clear. The net is not a cure for an ailing career, its just an enhancement tool.
But you gotta have something to enhance.
Signing, meet and greet.

Winner of the following awards.
The album Truth to Power, is a reflection on what I believe is the theme of our time. That is the re-balancing of values and for the first time since the 60’s a real questioning of our system.
What are the monetary systems the social systems, defense systems really doing for the people of the land. What should we really expect our government to provide for us as citizens and considering the new global power shifts, how are the old arcane ways of dividing and controlling a society holding us back in this new global day and age.
Renowned guitarist, singer and songwriter Jean-Paul Bourelly will embark on another vivifying tour as lead singer and guitarist with the group Stone Raiders in support of their upcoming debut album, Truth to Power. An album calling for the awakening of civilization through the mediums of Rock, Funk, Jazz and Soul. Afro-rock extraordinaire Will Calhoun on drums and Darryl “Munch” Jones(of Rolling Stones fame) on bass – whose vocals also adorn several tracks including ‘Power To Spirit’ – complete The Stone Raiders. Their debut offering is flowing with urgency with songs that gather the world’s inhabitants cry for justice and refine it into a compelling musical journey.
As the bands tour last summer preceded any recorded material, Jean-Paul and the rest of the band instilled a reverse distillation method to the album process. They used that tour as inspiration to work out the albums material. In the spirit of this process, advanced CD’s will be available exclusively at all Stone Raiders tour dates. Another bonus available only to concert goers.
Truth to Power may not be the cure to ‘The Money Disease’ – the closing track of the album – but it could be an eye opener to those unaware and a rallying cry to those who see it as clearly as Jean-Paul, Darryl and Will do.
Truth to Power will be released in April 2012 on Yellowbird Records, a division of the acclaimed German Jazz label Enja Records.

MAGIC OF THE NOW
JEAN-PAUL BOURELLY’s 50TH ANNIVERSARY PERFORMANCE
I am honored and excited to announce that my friends Archie Shepp, Jamaladeen Tacuma and Joe Bowie are coming to play with me on the 22 Nov to ring in my 50th birthday at the A-trane. I can’t think of a better way to begin the next half century.
I first met the legendary Archie Shepp in 1998 when when we played together at popkomm in Koln. My brother Carl and I used to listen to his records when we were kids. My favorite songs was called “Steam” and Archie and I played that song in that first Koln concert. Later we got the chance to collaborate in a wonderful way on my record Boom Bop.
The amazing Joe Bowie I first heard at the Peppermint lounge in New York with his group Defunkt. In those days all the guitar players wanted to get into that group because he was known to give the guitar space to expand and with Joe as the front man, it was clear they were destined for stardom.
He invited me later at New Yorks Knitting Factory, to record the Defunkt Special edition, “Tribute to Muddy Waters”.
My friendship with the irrepressible Jamaaladeen Tacuma started out in Philadelphia in 97 after a European tour with the recording of the group Brotherzone. Tacuma makes everyone just sound better. He is one of my favorite bassist of all time, mixing R&B with Jazz with harmolodic vibes that always keep his bass ideas cooking.
As for me Jean Paul Bourelly, I’ve been known as a force in new funk forms and I love to mix musical genre’s so this evening will surely turn into a high energy, multi dimensional groove party.
Responding to an endless search to transcend the blues, Native Chicago born guitarist, conceptualist Jean-Paul Bourelly assembled a deeply rooted and multi-cultural group of the finest musicians of modern blues terrain.
In this project, each musician brings to the table his own language of blues culture.
“Blues is like any other music in that it needs regeneration to stay relevant. Each person feeds their special take on that feeling into the pot of gumbo we call Blues Bandits.”
Lead Vocals Dean Bowman himself influenced by the legendary vocalizer Leon Thomas has a strong background in the church, is no stranger to the blues and experimentation.
Bourelly heard Sako Fily during a concert from his longtime friend singer Abdourahmane Diop (Boom Bop). Fily is the nephew of the great Kora master Toumani Diabaté brings an pedigree as well as a hypnotic flavor to rhythm.
Wynton Kelly Stevenson is the young urban voice of the blues and one that Bourelly took special interest in. The two met in a small club in Berlin’s Neuköln district. “This cat came in with a belt around his waist, full of harmonicas, a few effects and a RAT (portable amp) and what I heard was fresh, I mean fresh enough that I had to go and borrow an old beat up guitar from the backroom and jam with him.”
Darryl Taylor a Houston Texas native is well grounded in blues and R&B having a long association with 60’s soul group Archie Bell and the Drells.
What followed was Bourelly inviting him along with Fily to his Spontaneous Situation musician night. The group and the sound are born out of the musical exchanges during those 7 Spontaneous shows.

Jean-Paul Bourelly’s latest group is called 3Kings.
The trio consists of drummer Marlon Browden (Nora Jones and John Scofield) and bassist Jonas “Bibi” Hammond former bassist (with Ali Hassan Kuban) and Bourelly’s rhythmic meaty guitar.
3Kings music is a band that creates its sound from riding on rhythmic currents, highlighted by rugged cymbal work, deep bass grooves and a moody, stratospheric guitar.
This concoction is blended into a sound that is at once mystical and modern. »more info

Experimentaljazz im Krieg der Geschlechter
Gitarrist Jean-Paul Bourelly spielt in Percevals »Penthesilea«-Version
(Premiere. 21.2.08) »review »more info
